In a vibrant move to rekindle national pride and boost homegrown textile consumption, the Ministry of Textiles has launched the Swadeshi Campaign, a nationwide initiative to promote Indian handlooms, handicrafts and apparel. Spanning the next six to nine months, the campaign aims to celebrate India’s rich textile legacy while inspiring urban millennials and Gen Z to embrace indigenous fabrics as a modern symbol of style, identity and sustainability.
At its core, the campaign seeks to stimulate domestic demand by encouraging consumers to choose Indian-made textiles and apparel across lifestyle and fashion segments. It also aims to empower weavers, artisans and MSMEs, ensuring better visibility and stronger market linkages for traditional and contemporary textile producers. By aligning with national programs such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, PLI for Textiles, PM MITRA Parks and One District One Product (ODOP), the initiative integrates cultural pride with economic self-reliance.
Government ministries, PSUs and educational institutions will also be encouraged to adopt Indian-made fabrics in uniforms, furnishings, and décor, further expanding domestic market reach. The campaign will engage citizens through vibrant events, digital storytelling, and partnerships with state governments to promote local craftsmanship.
With India’s textile and apparel market valued at $179 billion in 2024, growing steadily at over 7 percent annually, the Swadeshi Campaign is poised to accelerate growth. Experts project that with these initiatives, the domestic textile market could touch $250 billion by 2030, reinforcing India’s position as both a global textile leader and a proud champion of its own heritage.
