India has taken a decisive step to strengthen its presence in the global textile and silk landscape through deeper cooperation with Georgia. A high-level delegation from the Ministry of Textiles, led by P. Sivakumar, Member Secretary of the Central Silk Board and Secretary General of the International Sericultural Commission, completed a five-day visit to Georgia aimed at building long-term collaboration in sericulture, textiles, apparel, and carpet trade.
During the visit, the Indian team participated in the 11th BACSA International Conference – CULTUSERI 2025. In his opening address, Sivakumar highlighted Indias unmatched heritage in silk cultivation and traditional craftsmanship, which continues to inspire modern textile innovation. He also presented a research paper titled The Chronicles of Wild Silk, offering a deep dive into Indias contribution to global sericulture knowledge.
Adding a scientific dimension, S. Manthira Moorthy, Director (Technical) at CSB, presented ongoing collaborative research between India and Bulgaria. His work introduced a productive bivoltine silkworm hybrid developed specifically for Indian climatic conditions, reflecting the power of international research partnerships.
A standout moment of the delegation was the unveiling of Indias unique 5-in-1 Silk Stole. This premium creation blends Mulberry, Oak Tasar, Tropical Tasar, Muga, and Eri silks in a single handcrafted product. Conceived under the initiative of Sivakumar, the stole symbolises Indias diverse silk legacy and its rising potential in luxury global markets.
The delegation also met senior government officials, university experts, sericulture laboratories, textile producers, carpet traders, and members of the Georgian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Discussions focused on strengthening market access, boosting joint ventures, and fostering collaborative research.
The visit concluded with renewed India–Georgia cooperation in textile science, expanded trade possibilities, and fresh pathways for institutional partnership. Through this engagement, India reinforces its position as a global force in sustainable and innovative silk and textile development.
